What is hempseed oil (hemp oil) ?

Hemp seed oil (hemp oil) is made by pressing hemp seeds and is used mostly because of omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids. Hemp seed oil is natural - whole food product that can be used in a wide range of recipes or consumed cold - it has a nice light nutty flavour.

What is hemp?

Hemp (from Old English hænep) is a commonly used term for varieties of the Cannabis plant and its products, which include fiber, oil, and seed. In many countries regulatory limits for concentrations of psychoactive drug compounds (THC) in hemp encourage the use of strains of the plant which are bred for low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content or otherwise have the THC removed.[1] Hemp is refined into products like hemp seed foods, hemp oil, wax, resin, rope, cloth, pulp, paper, and fuel.

Is hempseed oil same as medicinal marijuana oil?

Not at all. Hempseed oil is an actual OIL we get from hemp seeds, where "medicinal marijuana oil" is an extract of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and does not look like oil at all. Hempseed oil is legal in most countries across the globe, because it has a very low (if any) amount of THC, the other product "medicinal oil" is the actual THC and is illegal. Except for some countries that allow usage of marijuana for medicinal purposes.

How is hempseed oil consumed?

It is important that it is consumed cold, because high heat damages the essential fatty acids - so it causes damage to the oil. Other that that, you can add it to a wide range of recipes, mix in smoothies, use for salads, sauces, dips,... Here are some ideas - hempseed oil recipes.

Are there any negative side effects?

Negative side effects are not known. Hemp oil is categorised as food and it is consumed because it is rich with essential fatty acids.

Is hemp oil suitable for pets?

Of course, just like humans, all mammals need essential fatty acids. Many people add it to food of their pets. It is just important to take into consideration the weight of the pet. Recommended dosage is about 1 ml of oil per 5 kg of body weight.

Can consuming hempseed oil result in being positive on THC test?

The chances for that to happen are close to zero, but there are some notes about that being possible.

What is the difference between hemp and cannabis?

The most important difference is in amount of Tetrahydrocannabinol, the psycho-active substance found in plant. Cannabis has from 5 - 20 % (in some cases even more) of THC, hemp has less than 0,2 %. Different countries have different percentage for level of THC, but most countries in Europe have 0,2 %.

Are there any scientific studies about positive effects of hempseed oil?

Of course. Ask Google about "hempseed oil studies" or "omega 3" and you will get the chance to read all about it. Some positive effects of hempseed oil on health can be found here.

How to store hemp oil?

It is best to store in a cold and dark place. It is important to avoid high temperatures and to use the bottle in about 4 months after being opened.

Can hempseed oil become potentially danger / unhealthy?

Yes it can go bad - all the food can. It is important to buy premium quality hemp oil, to store cool and to avoid high temperatures when preparing dishes. Temperatures above 150 degrees celsius will cause damage to structure of the oil.

Can children consume hemp oil?

Of course, but again keep in mind body weight. Dosages have to be adjusted, considering body weight.

How much hempseed oil should be consumed daily? / What is recommended daily dosage?

By consuming 16 g (about 2 table spoons) /  an adult covers daily needs for linoleic acid

What are essential fatty acids and why are they so important?

Essential fatty acids, or EFAs, are fatty acids that humans and other animals must ingest because the body requires them for good health but cannot synthesize them.[1] The term "essential fatty acid" refers to fatty acids required for biological processes but does not include the fats that only act as fuel.

Only two fatty acids are known to be essential for humans: alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) and linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid). Some other fatty acids are sometimes classified as "conditionally essential," meaning that they can become essential under some developmental or disease conditions; examples include docosahexaenoic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) and gamma-linolenic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid).

When the two EFAs were discovered in 1923, they were designated "vitamin F", but in 1929, research on rats showed that the two EFAs are better classified as fats rather than vitamins.

What is the result of insufficient intake of essential fatty acids?

An insufficient intake can result in cells not functioning well, which eventually leads to health problems. In extreme cases lack of EFA's in human body can lead to death.

Can hemp oil help with allergies?

EFA's in hempseed oil have positive effects on cells and the way they function, which in some cases also helps with allergies.

Can I consume hemp oil if I am allergic to nuts?

Yes. There are not known negative reactions in case of allergies to nuts.

What is the difference between Organic (BIO, Ecological, EKO) hempseed oil and the oil without certificate?

Hemp plant is known also for it's ability to clear ground of heavy metal pollution - so it is extremely important that hemp, used for human consumption, is grown according to Organic standards. This means it is grown in healthy conditions and also that it is tested for potentially dangerous ingredients. Which makes it healthy. By buying products that are not grown under Organic standards and are not tested for heavy metals it just might happen, you will do more damage than good to your body.
